  Tyto 5- Masked Owl
During 2005, I was fortunate enough to spend many nights with a family of Masked Owls in the forest near Awaba, NSW. The 2 pale phase Masked Owls sucessfully reared two owlets. The male brought small prey to the nest- mostly House Mouse Mus musculus and Brown Antechinus Antechinus stuartii. The female remained with the young until the male just couldn't bring enough food to the growing youngsters and herself. Once she began hunting she brought larger mammals including Bush Rat Rattus fuscipes and Petaurus gliders. The female Masked Owl is usually considerably larger than her mate and is presumably more capable of catching larger prey. Does this mean that she hunts in different areas to her mate? If you would like to read more about my observations you can download the following article: Prey................
