The Auckland Islands lie about 460km south of the town of Bluff. The main Auckland Island is 40 km long and almost 51,000 hectares in area making it the largest of the subantarctic islands. were discovered by whalers in 1806. In 1807 the first pigs were thoughtfully introduced. They are still there today (or at least their descendants are). They are volcanic in origin.
